Cloud Optimisation and FinOps

The Cloud has changed the IT services market, introducing new price dynamics. Cloud FinOps involves the continuous management and optimisation of the budget of the cloud portfolio, enabling clients to optimise their setup and keep costs down.

Cloud FinOps consists of many different activities, but the main task of FinOps is to manage and optimise capacity, track total consumption and create transparency in costs across cloud platforms.

Why work with FinOps?

The cloud has changed the IT services market, introducing new price dynamics. Cloud FinOps involves the continuous management and optimisation of the budget of the cloud portfolio, enabling clients to optimise their setup and keep costs down.

Cloud FinOps comprises many different activities, but the main task of FinOps is to manage and optimise capacity, track total consumption and create transparency in costs across cloud platforms. The potential gain of implementing Cloud FinOps depends on clients’ consumption, but it is not uncommon to see a 40-50% drop in the cost of carrying out FinOps tasks.

When should you work with FinOps?

Working with Cloud FinOps requires an investment, so is most appropriate for organisations, in which a significant part of the total IT setup workload is either being, or about to be migrated to the cloud. However, we must emphasise that for organisations with small cloud investments or those about to embark on the cloud voyage, it is still worthwhile to get acquainted with the basic concepts of Cloud FinOps.

Our assistance

Zangenberg Group has been following the public Cloud services market since 2018 and has compiled a database, in which, day in and day out, we collect price points from the major public cloud providers. This enables us to observe the movements in the market, and has provided us with knowledge of how prices develop over time. We deploy this knowledge to optimise the cloud consumption of our clients and to provide insight into that consumption. At the same time, by applying knowledge from our database and relevant comparison groups, we provide independent data on comparable on-premise and traditionally outsourced solutions.

The FinOps consulting process kicks off with a review of the company’s existing cloud consumption and cloud consumption patterns. We then analyse potential optimisation measures and come up with recommendations. In collaboration with the client, we devise a number of design principles for future cloud consumption.

An additional service involves offering to keep an eye on the organisation’s costs at regular intervals, on which we agree with you. We thereby ensure that you continue to make optimum use of your cloud capacity.

Results of the process

  • A fully optimised cloud portfolio based on client needs and overall strategy
  • Design principles for cost optimisation and management
